Chất bán dẫn là vật liệu trung gian giữa chất cách điện và chất dẫn điện. Chất bán dẫn hoạt động như chất cách điện ở nhiệt độ thấp và hoạt động như một chất dẫn điện ở nhiệt độ cao.

Ở nhiệt độ thấp, điện trở suất của chất bán dẫn siêu tinh khiết rất lớn. Khi nhiệt độ tăng, điện trở suất giảm nhanh, hệ số nhiệt điện trở có giá trị âm.

-Chất bán dẫn có hai loại hạt tải điện là electron và lỗ trống.
-Dòng điện trong bán dẫn là dòng các electron dẫn chuyển động ngược chiều điện trường và dòng các lỗ trống chuyển động cùng chiều điện trường

-Khi pha tạp chất là những nguyên tố có năm electron hóa trị vào trong tinh thể silic thì mỗi nguyên tử tạp chất này cho tinh thể một electron dẫn. Ta gọi chúng là tạp chất cho hay đôno. Bán dẫn có pha đôno là bán dẫn loại n, hạt tải điện chủ yếu là electron.
-Khi pha tạp chất là những nguyên tố có ba electron hóa trị vào trong tinh thể silic thì mỗi nguyên tử tạp chất này nhận một electron liên kết và sinh ra một lỗ trống, nên được gọi là tạp chất nhận hay axepto.
Bán dẫn có pha axepto là bán dẫn loại p, hạt tải điện chủ yếu là các lỗ trống
