Oriental motherwort (Chinese motherwort)
1) Introduction:
Oriental motherwort or Chinese motherwort is a herbaceous flowering plant native to Asia, including Korea and Japan, and China to Cambodia. In Chinese, it is named 益母草, which means “good for women” and indicates its traditional function.
• Two- part nomenclature: Leonurus heterophyllus.
• Family: Lamiaceae.
2) Distribution:
Oriental motherwort lives in sunny areas at altitudes from 0 to 3,400 m in China, Far East Russia, Taiwan, Cambodia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, India, Thailand, Vietnam; Africa, North America, South America.
3) Feature:
• Plants are annual or biennial, growing from taproots. The stems are upright growing to a height of 30 to 120 cm. The flowers are sessile and produced in verticillasters. The calyx is tubular-campanulate shaped and 6–8 mm long with broad triangle shaped teeth. The corolla is white or reddish to purplish red in color. Plants bloom from June to September.
• It has escaped cultivation and become naturalized in other parts of the world including South and North America, Europe and Africa.
4) Chemical composition:
Oriental motherwort has alkaloid (leonurin), iridoid, flavonoid, essential.
5) Uses:
Oriental motherwort is used for heart conditions, including heart failure, irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, and heart symptoms due to anxiety. It is also used for the absence of menstrual periods, intestinal gas (flatulence), and over-active thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
Perilla
Perilla is a genus consisting of one major Asiatic crop species Perilla frutescens and a few wild species in nature belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae
Perilla varieties are cultivated and consumed mainly in Korea, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. P. frutescens leaves, seeds, and seed oil are used extensively in Korean cuisine, while P. frutescens var.crispa leaves, seeds, and sprouts are used in Vietnamese cuisines.



Perilla is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is used to :
-Reduce stomach pain: Thanks to tannin and glucosid, it helps to fight inflammation and astringent stomach ulcers




-Disperse wind-cold: Patients should use perilla leaves to steam and cook porridge to heal early.
Mental relaxation:The leaves of this plant contain rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and apigenin to help prevent and treat depression.
Prevent heart disease:Using cooking oil extracted from perilla seeds can prevent cardiovascular diseases.

2. Distribution: It is native to the warm temperature regions of Europe , West Asia and Central Asia , the Himalayas to eastern Siberia and North America.

3. Feature : Peppermint is a herbaceous perennial, growing to 10–60 cm (sometimes up to 100 cm) in height. Leaves are simple, symmetrical, 2–6.5 cm long and 1–2 cm wide, hairy, with a coarse serrated edge. The flowers are light purple (sometimes white or pink), growing in clusters on the stem, each flower 3–4 mm long .

4. Cultivating and harvesting :
Growing mint by underground stalks.
Planting season: February - March.
Harvest at the beginning of the plant and flowering (about 90 days after planting). Can be harvested twice (in mountainous areas), 3 times (in lowland provinces) or 5 times (in southern provinces). Annual world production is 4,300 tons (1990).
Main producing countries: China, India, North Korea, Taiwan,Vietnam,….
