What’s the big idea?
When people try to make predictions about the future, they usually get them completely wrong, like the prediction made by T.J Watson, the head of IBM, in 1943:’I think there maybe a market for five computer in total in the world.’ Today, about 45 million PCs are sold every year in the USA alone.
Nanotechnology is the science of building tiny machines, so small that you cannot see them. Most scientist agree that nanotechnology will change our lives in the future – but how? It’s difficult to predict whether this new technology will be like a wonderful dream, or a
terrifying nightmare.

Đa số nhà khoa học đồng tình rằng công nghệ nano sẽ thay đổi cuộc sống của chúng ta trong tương lai – nhưng bằng cách nào? Rất khó để chế tạo công nghệ mới này để trở thành một giấc mơ tuyệt vời hay một cơn ác mộng đáng sợ.

The dream
In the 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage, an inventor develops an amazing new way to cure disease. He makes a group of scientist and their submarine incredibly small and injects them all into a patient. They then travel around the body of the patient,visiting the different parts and repairing them. Of course, this is just a fantasy – but the reality of nanotechnology is not very different. Scientists are already making nanobots, tiny robots that are smaller than a virus. In the future, doctors might be able to inject these into a patient, and the nanobots will travel around the body and repair any damage. They’ll be able to cure almost every disease.

The nightmare
Some people are worried that nanotechnology could be difficult to control. Nanobots might escape into the environment and damage people, plant and animals. Others have even more serious worries. Eric Drexler is a futurist, a sciencetist who makes predictions about the future. In his book, Engines of Creation, he also described a special kind of nanobot that can make a copy of itself using the materials around it – and this is where the nightmare begins. In Michael Crichton’s book Prey, nanobots make copies of themselves so quickly thay they use all the materials around and then look for more…and more and more, eventually ‘eating’ the world. Some people are worried that this might really happen. The most extreme prediction (which very few scientist believe) say that nanobots could destroy the entire planet in about three hours!

Số khác thậm chí còn nghĩ đến trường hợp tệ hơn. Ông Eric Drexler là một nhà tiên tri, một nhà khoa học đã có lời tiên tri về tương lai trong quyển sách của ông có tựa đề là Engines of Creation,ông dự đoán phát minh là con rô-bô nano ấy . Đồng thời, ông cũng giải thích về mặt đặc biệt của con rô-bô là nó có thể tự sao chép và sử dụng vật liệu chung quanh để tạo ra một con rô-bô hoàn toàn giống nó – đây là nơi cơn ác mộng bắt đầu. Trong quyển sách Prey của Michael Crichton, con rô-bô này “nhân bản” cực kì nhanh và sẽ sự dụng hết vật liệu chung quanh rồi chúng tìm thêm thêm nữa và thêm nữa,… rồi cuối cùng bao trùm cả thế giới. Một số người lo lắng rằng điều này rất có thể sẽ xảy ra. Lời tiên tri phổ biến nhất(cái mà một số các nhà khoa học tin) nói rằng những con rô-bô ấy có thể tiêu diệt cả hành tinh này chỉ trong khoảng 3 tiếng đồng hồ!
