II. Grammar : Past simple and present perfect
1. Past simple (Thì quá khứ đơn)
Use: - Diễn tả sự việc, hành động đã diễn ra và chấm dứt tại một điểm thời gian cụ thể (xác định trong quá khứ)
Signal words: (từ nhận biết) last, yesterday, ago, in + năm quá khứ …
Eg: I watched that film last night.
I didn’t watch that film last night.
Did you watch that film last night? – Yes, I did/ No, I didn’t.

2. Present perfect (Thì hiện tại hoàn thành)
Use: - Diễn tả sự việc hành động xảy ra từ trong quá khứ mà kết quả của nó còn lưu lại đến hiện tại.
- Diễn tả sự việc, hành động vừa mới xẩy ra mà không đề cập đến thời gian cụ thể.
c. Signal words: since, for, already, recently, just, so far, before, not…yet, ever, never…
Eg: I have seen that film already.
I haven’t seen that film yet.
Have you seen that film before?- Yes, I have/ No, I haven’t.
1. a) Listen again to part of the conversation. Underline the past simple or the present perfect
Reporter: Have you ever done volunteer work?
Mai: Yes. I’m a member of Be a Bubby – a programme that helps street children. Last year we provided evening classes for fifty children.
Reporter: Wonderful! What else have you done?

1. b) When do we use the past simple? When do we use the present perfect? Can you think of the rules?
*Past simple (Thì quá khứ đơn)
We use the past simple for an action that started and finished in the past.
(Chúng ta sử dụng thì quá khứ đơn để diễn tả một hành động xảy ra và kết thúc ở quá khứ có đề cập đến thời gian cụ thể)
Eg: Last year we provided evening classes for fifty chilren.
* Dấu hiệu nhận biết: last, yesterday, ago, in + năm quá khứ
Present perfect (Thì hiện tại hoàn thành)
We use the present perfect for an action that happened some time before now. The exact time is not important
(Hiện tại hoàn thành diễn tả một hành động xảy ra và kết thúc ở một thời điểm không xác định trong quá khứ hoặc không nhấn mạnh thời gian)
Dấu hiệu nhận biết: since, for, already, recently, just, so far, before, not…yet, ever, never…
Eg: We’ve asked people to donate books and clothes to the children.
Remember
- We often use specific time expressions (Yesterday, last month, two years ago), with the past simple.
(Chúng ta thường sử dụng các trạng từ thời gian cụ thể (Hôm qua, tháng trước, hai năm trước) với thì qua khứ đơn.
- We often use ever, never, so far, several times, etc with the present perfect
Chúng ta thường sử dụng (đã từng, chưa bao giờ, cho đến nay, vài lần) với thì hiện tại hoàn thành.
