Matching adv of time & adv of place in the direct speech with the reported speech
1. Direct Speech: (Câu trực tiếp)
Câu trực tiếp: là câu được sử dụng tường thuật nguyên văn lời của người nói. Trong văn viết, câu trực tiếp thường được để trong dấu ngoặc kép.
Ví dụ: She said: “I am fine.”
(Cô ấy nói: “Tôi ổn.”).
2. Indirect/ Reported Speech: (Câu gián tiếp/ câu tường thuật)
Câu gián tiếp (câu tường thuật) được sử dụng để thuật lại ý chính mà người khác đã nói. Vì không thuật lại nguyên văn nên câu gián tiếp thường đứng sau “that” thay vì được bỏ vào ngoặc kép.
Ví dụ: She said that she was fine. (Cô ấy nói cô ấy ổn.)

S + said/ told O + (that) + S + V(lùi về quá khứ một thì) + O
2. Yes/ No questions
Ex: Tom said: “I will come here next day”.
→ Tom said that he would come there the next day
Ex: Tom asked: “Do you live here?”
→ Tom asked me if I lived there.
3. Wh/ H questions:
Ex: Tom asked: “Where do you live now?”
→ Tom asked me where I lived then.
1. Reported speech: statements
Example:
       Direct speech:      “I’ll talk to Mr Jones,” said he.
       Reported speech: He said he would talk to Mr Jones.
Ex 2. Rewrite the following sentences in reported speech.
1. `We will visit you this week,` my parents told me.

2. Our teacher asked us, `What are you most worried about?`

3. `I`m so delighted. I`ve just received a surprise birthday present from my sister,` Phuong told me.


4. `Kate can keep calm even when she has lots of pressure,` Tom said.

5. `I got a very high score in my last test, Mum,’ she said.


6. `Do you sleep at least eight hours a day?` the doctor asked him.
→ My parents told me that they would visit me that week.
→ Our teacher asked us what we were most worried about.
→ Phuong told me that she was so delighted because she had just received a surprise
birthday present from her sister.
→ Tom said Kate could keep calm even when she had lots of pressure.
→ She told her mother that she had got a very high score in her last test.
→ The doctor asked him if he slept at least eight hours a day.
Question words before to infinitive (Wh + to + V(inf)
Ex: “She doesn’t know who she should contact”.
→ She doesn’t know who to contact.
Look out!
“WHY” cannot be used: to V(inf)
to V(inf)
→ to express difficult or uncertain situations.

Tip: You may use the following verbs: ask, wonder, (not) be sure, have no idea, (not) know, (not) decide, (not) tell.

Decide as a whole class five questions you want to ask about the teacher. Then the class divides into two groups: one group stays inside the class and the other goes outside. The teacher will tell each group the answers to the questions. The class gets together again and in pairs you must report on what the teacher has told you.
