II. Read the passage below carefully and choose the best answer. 

 Never will I forget the terrible fire I witnessed two weeks ago. It was about nine o’clock in the evening and we were watching television. Suddenly I heard terrible shouts outside. We rushed out and to our bewilderment, noticed that the house at the corner of the street had just caught fire.

 People were running out of the burning house, carrying what they could. The raging flames rose higher and higher, a moment later the staircase suddenly fell down since the flames had burnt it completely. We heard the shouts of a woman from a window on the top floor. She could not escape from the burning house because the fire had trapped her.

 Fortunately, the firemen arrived; they quickly stretched out a net below and told her to jump down. After a short time of hesitation, the women jumped into the net, but she was taken to hospital at once since she fainted from fear.

 Every effort was made to put out the fire and after half an hour, the firemen succeeded in subduing the fire, but the house was wholly destroyed. Several people had to spend the night in the open because the fire made them homeless.
