Friends are a necessity in every child’s life. They are there to comfort, to laugh with, and to create wonderful memories. Friendship is being there for someone when they need you, and to have a common bond to have the freedom of hanging out with each other and to be comfortable around each other. The main ideas of friendship are honesty and trust, caring and having similarities.

Without honesty and trust, friendship wouldn’t last very long. The definition of honesty is “quality and condition of being honest, integrity”. Friendship would be held up by honesty. Trust is another important thing that relates to honesty, your friends really need to trust you.

In addition, you need to care for your friends so the relationship will last. The definition for caring is to be concerned or interested for others. An example of care is being there when someone really need you like during a bad situation. You should also be supportive of your friends.

Thirdly, similarities in friendship will make the bond grow. The definition of similarities is the quality or condition of being alike, resemblance. For example, two friends like the same kind of music. Similarities in interests are things like a couple of friends liking the same thing like music, hobbies and many other things. It would help by making them want to do more things together.

Good friends will always use honesty and trust, caring and support, and similarities in interest if they want their friendship to last.

                                                                                         Quynh Nhai, August 2nd 2012

Dear Lan,

How have you been doing? Have you got any plan for the coming school break? Perhaps I will go to see my grandparents in the countryside. I haven’t seen them since my last school holiday.

Let me tell you about my last summer vacation at my grandparents’. It was almost a year ago and was one of my most unforgettable experiences.

My grandparents live in a small village in Quynh Nhai. There is a large river at the back of their house where I often go swimming every afternoon when I spend my vacation with them.

One day when I was swimming with some of my friends, I suddenly caught a cold. I felt so dizzy and was too weak to continue swimming, so I started to sink. I thought I was going to drown but I couldn’t call out for help because I was too tired and terrified. Luckily, one of my friends saw that and shouted for help. Immediately, another friend who swims the best among us swam towards me and tried to pull me up. Then other friends swam towards us to help him push me in.. My life was finally saved.
Now recalling the moment I thought I was going to die, I understand how precious life is. This event definitely taught me to appreciate my life.

What about you? Have you got any unforgettable holiday that you would like to share with me?

See you soon.

07. Imagine that you really want to have a mobile phone. Write about the advantages of using a mobile phone so that your parents will let you have one

Notes:

1. Brainstorm the advantages of using a mobile phone.

* be able to contact with others:

- by calling                      - by sending text messages              - at anytime

- at any place                       - at a reasonable cost

* other advantages:

installing dictionaries --> good for learning languages

going online to check mails & download documents for study --> very convenient

listening to music, taking photos --> no need to buy other devices

2. Think of the ways to present your ideas.

Example: First, Second, Next, What is more, Finally, In summary, etc.

Suggested Writing

In this modern life, using a mobile phone is very useful and convenient, especially for a high-school student as me.

First and foremost, a mobile phone is a great way of contacting among people. Because it is small and portable, people can take it wherever and whenever you want. Therefore, they can contact with others at anytime and any place. This is especially important for a high school student as me. For example, when I am in an emergency situation, I can call Mum or Dad or relatives or friends to help me. Or, whenever I am late for home after school or whenever you want to check my location, you can call me and find out for yourselves.

Secondly, people can contact in different ways with a mobile phone. It is possible to make a call, send text messages or use the recorded message service. All of these are now offered at reasonable costs which are not expensive for students. Not to mention, some mobile network providers offer specific costs for high-school students, therefore, I think I can afford them within my limited budget.

Furthermore, a mobile phone can help a lot in my study. Specifically, I can install dictionaries for learning languages. Also, it can be connected to the Internet, so it is possible for me to check my emails and download necessary and useful materials for my study. In my opinion, if I take advantage of these conveniences, my study performance can be improved a lot.

Last but not least, with a mobile phone, I can relax after much time of studying. Listening to music, playing games, taking photographs are all different ways of reducing stress in a cell phone. This can make it unnecessary to buy other entertainment devices

1

.To sum up, the listed advantages of a mobile above are good reasons for me to own a mobile phone. Thank you for your consideration.

08. Environmental conservation is currently a big concern to people all over the world. Write about the things that you, as a high school student, can do to preserve the environment.

Notes:

1. Brainstorm what a high school student can do to protect his surroundings

not throwing trash/garbage/waste away, putting them into bins or recycling them

not harming trees in parks or on streets, planting as many trees as possible

raising other people's awareness of protecting the environment...

2. Think of the ways to present your ideas.

Example: First, Second, Next, What is more, Finally, In summary, etc.

Suggested writing

The environment has been destroyed almost everywhere, therefore, it is necessary for human beings to act immediately to protect our Earth. As a high school student, I think there are quite a lot of things I can do to make our environment greener and cleaner.
First of all, trash definitely harms the environment; hence, I would never throw it away. Instead, I would put my garbage into categorized bins. Specifically, recyclable rubbish will be put into a bin, and the unrecyclable will be placed in another one. This would make it easy for those in charge to handle the trash, as a result, the environment would benefit.

Next, I would plant more trees in my house and my garden. In my opinion, if everyone did like me, there would be a lot of trees and plants; as a result, our environment would be much greener and cleaner. Also, I would protect the trees and plants in the parks, on streets, and so on by never cutting them down or taking their leaves or plucking flowers if not allowed.

Last but not least, raising public awareness of protecting their surroundings is another thing I would do. Many people do not know clearly about the effects of what they are doing to the environment every day. If they do, they may stop what they are doing. Therefore, I would show them the possible results from their bad activities to the Earth, and tell them what they should do to protect their own lives and their future generations. These can be done by letting them watch the relevant TV or radio programs, sticking posters on public walls, and especially acting as a model to encourage them to follow, and so forth.

In summary, environmental conservation should be every single individual’s concern, with no exception of me. The things listed above are what I promise to do to make our planet increasingly greener and cleaner.

09. One day the world’s oil and gas reserves will run out; therefore, alternative sources of energy such as wind power, solar power, burning waste, and water power have been considered. However, it is said that these sources may cause as much as environmental waste as the oil and nuclear power sources that they are going to replace. To what extent do you agree with this latter statement? Do you approve the use of the listed alternative sources of energy?

Notes:

1. Brainstorm the examples for the criticism against the use of alternative sources of energy

- wind farms in European countries: ugly even far away from the coast

- burning waste: creates by-product that pollutes the air

- water power: expensive dams...

2. Think of the reasons for your approval of the use of alternative sources of energy.

- the advancement of technology --> harmful by-product is minimized

- necessary equipment --> cheaper and more environmentally friendly

- water power --> safer than nuclear energy

* Suggested writing

The idea that alternative energy sources such as wind power, etc. cause as much environmental damage as fossil fuel is reasonable, to some extent. Some people, for example, are strongly against the use of wind power. Indeed, the large wind farms in some European countries have been heavily criticized not just by environmentalists. They are very ugly, even if they are in the sea far away from the coast. Burning household waste for fuel also causes problems, because of the harmful fumes that are the by-product of the process. So while the amount of waste put into landfill sites is reduced thus preserving the environment, the air is being polluted instead! However, in my opinion, such sources need to be encouraged as a means of replacing fossil fuel as they have considerable advantages.

First of all, as the technology for using alternative sources of energy is becoming more and more sophisticated, any harmful by-product will be minimized. Moreover, the cost of producing the necessary equipment will decline. Take solar energy, for example. In the past, the panels that were needed to utilize energy from the sun were huge and not very environmentally friendly. Now, however, the same panels are small enough not to be noticed or are made to look like say roof tiles or normal parts of vehicles. The same will apply to wind farms as the giant turbines become smaller and less obvious.

Energy from water also comes in for a lot of criticism. This has come about from the many high profile dam projects around the world where huge areas have been destroyed both for people and local flora and fauna. However, it is a safer alternative to nuclear energy and a price that has to be paid.

1

Whilst any form of energy that we seek to utilize is going to cause some damage, I feel that wind, sun and water have to be harnessed for the good of the environment.

The chart provides information on the results of the Vietnamese athletes in some sports at the 15th Asian Games in Qatar in 2006.

According to the chart, shooting and karate both won four medals - the largest quantity among the listed sports. However, the details were quite different. The shooting athletes won no gold, one silver, and three bronze medals. Meanwhile, athletes in karate won one gold, two silver, and one bronze ones.
